Agnes von Uray
Born in Budapest in 1965

I'm interested in looks, glances. A look is attention, watching, seeing. A look is possession, play and attack.

I'm searching for the answers to my questions. The answers come in images. I often use film stills for my works, because a film is like a "life model", ie life played in a short time. Sometimes I find myself comparing my life to a film scene. Reality is interwoven with the narrated, artificial world. The best recorded moments mirror and even anticipate life. The Greek theatre was educational, practically a psychotherapy. A good film works the same way. The moments of my life are just as real as a film I lived through. We can call it magic, because it is. I choose my pictures based on whether I can relive it, whether I can abandon myself to the scene during painting. What's not inside me, can't come out. I can make the scenes and the looks "real" only if I experienced them. We can choose from our one thousand faces. Thus, I usually paint women. I examine my femininity, my questions and doubts. I try to word what's shaping in the depths of my conscience.

"The expansion of time, the moment out of motion fascinated me about these pictures. It is interesting, because in theory, the photo does the same thing, but here, the "filmstill" feature is dominant, and it gives a kind of magic to the pictures."
